I got an email from the hiring manager for a job I applied to about a month ago, it’s the first response I’d received, so I was super excited. The email said that they wanted to set up a time to call me and discuss the open positions they had.
So my brain immediately thinks, “Ok, they say my resume and liked it, but they had a different position they think I’d be a better fit for and want to discuss that position with me.”
We set up a time to talk, and he calls yesterday afternoon, I immediately notice that he’s very formal and business-like which throws me off because I was expecting something less formal. Still, then he goes on to ask me HR-style interview questions like “describe a time when you worked in a team.” Again, the email made no mention of scheduling this to be an interview, so I was taken entirely off guard, but I did my best to answer his questions though I hadn’t prepared a response. Luckily I looked up the posting again before the call and did some basic research into the role, so I didn’t look like I didn’t know what I had applied to. So it could’ve gone worse, but I’m still worried that I screwed it up by being unprepared for what he was expecting.
