Stupid Career Mistakes: You Never Meet New People
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Is it any wonder that you don’t have a network when you need one!!!
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, the head coach for JobSearch.Community. And this is one of those stupid career mistakes that I want to point out to you whether you’re job hunting or not. Hopefully, you’re in the not category not because I don’t think you can get a job but I want you to start thinking ahead to when you are looking for a job. This mistake is a classic one that people make professionally and it’s a notion of never meeting anyone new, never developing relationships with anyone new.
They do the same thing repetitively every day of their life and then they wonder, hey, I’m looking for a job. Who’s gonna help me? And the answer is no one because you know the same four people at work. You look at the same three faces on your commute and if you’re driving, you don’t even have that.
You go to the same place for lunch every day, give people a head nod and that’s as much engagement as you have. Then you commute home to your wife, husband, partner, kids and you never go meet anyone new and the statistics are very clear that 70 percent of positions are filled as a result of networking and 70 percent of them or 49 percent come as a result of introductions to people that your network knows you don’t. Now, I’m not saying that it’s as simple as meeting new people.
I’m saying that that’s the launch point and then from there, you have to connect with them from time to time. A quick email, a quick text, a quick message, a note in the mail. You remember what the mail is, right? Whatever form you take, you stay in contact with folks.
Christmas, the holidays, they’re a great time of the year to do it for everyone because you just drop a quick note to someone and you update them at that time. Holidays are a wonderful time of the year to reconnect. I saw your name.
I just wanted to reach out to you and see how you were. What a wonderful time just to spend a little bit of time when things are a little slower or in the aftermath of the holidays to do that. It’s really very simple.
If you don’t start connecting with people, there’s no one there to help you when you need it and in connecting with people, you have to be prepared to help others. Duh! You think anyone’s going to help you if they know jack shit about you or you do nothing to help them when they need you? So, be a gracious human being. Start connecting with more people.
Start helping more people. It will go a long way toward helping you when you need help. I’m Jeff Altman.
