Should My Career Transition Begin With a SWOT Analysis?

Should My Career Transition Begin With a SWOT Analysis?

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

LinkedIn’s AI believes that the first step in a flexible career transition plan is to assess your situation. “The first step in creating a flexible career transition plan is to assess your current situation and identify your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT). A SWOT analysis can help you evaluate your skills, interests, values, and personality, as well as your external environment, such as your industry, network, and market trends. By doing a SWOT analysis, you can gain a clear picture of where you are now, where you want to go, and what you need to do to get there.”

My thinking is different.

I am going to speak with those of you who are more experienced. Before you would ever consider a SWOT, what is your heart telling you to do? If you are too frightened to know, have you taken any career assessment exams to give you any ideas yet? Have you spoken to a few people who do that type of work to see if your idea of the career matches with reality? Once you’ve done these few things, then you can move to a SWOT analysis.
