Most people don’t do the little things that help them become successful when interviewing. Here is a simple three-minute exercise to do after each interview.
I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm a coach who helps people who helps people
with job search, hiring more effectively, managing and leading, being effective in the
workplace, as well. Now, this video is about setting yourself up for success on your second
interview, on your third interview, on final interview because most of you don't do this.
Most of you will act like amateurs when job hunting and don't do the little things that
make all the difference. Like practice. But that's a different conversation. Today I want
to give you a concrete recommendation based upon 40 years of search experience that I
have where I filled lots of positions for clients all over the country. What I want
you to do after every interview with a firm is to take notes down. The notes are really
about what were they curious about in your background? Where was it in your background
that they were particularly interested in digging deeper? Were there any rough spots
that occurred? Rough spots, in particular are important as you get further in the process
because this is where their reservation is about you. Let's not get blind to this. Let;s
pay attention to this and see whether or not there are things that you can learn between
now and the next interview that will strengthen your capabilities. Also, further along in
the process, you're going to forget things from earlier on that were important to them,
that they signaled in the way they asked questions.v.v.vand you just have to be aware. This becomes a
refresher. As soon as you walk out of the interview or you finish the phone or video
interview take out your phone, take out your iPad or a piece of paper (as long as you can
organize the piece of paper so it's retrieval for you and jot down what were they interested
in in my background? what weren't they sure about in my background? Where were they digging
in deeper? Keep that accessible. How did they describe the position to you? Because you
may think you have it from the job description but as every hiring manager I've interviewed
for my podcast and for Job Search TV tells me, job descriptions are 80% accurate. The
phone interview, the video interview, the in-person interviews are going to be far more
accurate. Don't forget, take down notes as though it's a post-mortem after the interview
so that in this way you have reference points because if you have multiple interviews going
on, it's pretty common to get confused. Be organized and you will so benefit from it
once you to the final because they're going to dig in deep to that rough spot to see if
