Resume Pet Peeves

Hi, it’s Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. And I want to talk with you today about one of my—actually, two of my resume pet peeves.
The first one is embedding your contact information in the header on your resume. I’m not talking about not having it there. I’m talking about using the embedding feature in Microsoft Word to place your contact information.
The second peeve is about separating your phone number from your resume.
Now, it’s all part of the same thing. And that is, as a recruiter—and this is whether for me as a third-party recruiter or for corporate recruiters—we’re all using parsing software. After all, did you really think we were retyping your resume to get into our databases? Of course not.
And one of the things that embedding your contact information does is it requires someone to manually parse it. You know, that is open up the embedded header, copy, close it, paste, select all, copy, import. Come on, be considerate. It’s selfish. You think it looks good; it’s a pain in the rear.
Same thing with separating the phone number. I just saw a resume a moment ago. Person puts a name and a phone number on the resume—I’m sorry, name and an email address on the resume. I then have to go over and see where this person put their phone number. I find it in the message area. Okay, it’s there. I now have to copy it, paste it into the resume. Doesn’t sound like much, but I’m reading 300 resumes a day. Help me help you.
You know, I’m selling for a living. I’m trying to help a lot of people who are out of work find work. I’m trying to help my clients find people to hire. It’s a pain in the rear. Make it easy for us, all of us, and stop doing these stupid little things that waste people’s time, okay?
So that’s my tip for today. Have a great day.
