Submitting a beautifully formatted resume with special fonts and atypical formatting is like committing self-sabotage to being considered.

How Do You Address a Layoff In Your Resume?

If you’re going to submit your resume to an applicant tracking system, the systems really only want to see things that are flat, dull, boring, nothing in the way of fancy fonts or unusual formats. They just want to be able to parse information into the correct fields. And if you give it a resume that has multiple columns, a thin column, a thick column, anything along those lines, a font that it has trouble digesting, it’s going to choke on your resume. It’ll never get into the system, it’ll get rejected, and with that, so will you.

Now, it’s not that those résumés that you really love because they look so beautiful don’t have a purpose. They have a purpose in an in-person interview. They have a purpose when you’re meeting someone and you want to give them a resume. But for purposes of applying for a job, flat, dull, boring, almost like it was typed—a typed resume—that’s what really works.
