Hi, I’m Jeff Altman. People hire me for no BS job search coaching and career advice globally, because I make finding work much easier. Now, I want to talk with you about a lazy mistake that you’re making that’s unbelievable. Well, let me just go into it.
You know you’re supposed to tailor your resume. But it used to be hard to do and tedious to do. You’d have to sit there with a job description, kind of go back and forth with it a few times, and rewrite your resume to accommodate an employer. You don’t have to do that anymore. You can use ChatGPT, Bard or Claude-2, your AI of choice to do it for you. And it’s really very easy.
All you have to do is instruct it to say, “Tailor my resume for (whatever the position is) at such and such firm. Here’s the job description (and you copy and paste it into the into the search box), and here’s my resume, and you copy and paste that there as well. And it will do a rewrite for you that’s pretty damn good.
Now I would myself, because I’ve done this with clients, have filtered even more. I would tailor it by looking at individual components that I know are particularly strong for the person and as a requirement for the job and emphasize that, and position that information earlier in the document in order to ensure that the AI that they use, the applicant tracking system that they use, picks up on the relevance of the skill.
After all, when applicant tracking systems are looking at background, they’re looking at recency, which it measures as being higher up in the document. So, if it’s at the bottom of page one, it is less desirable than at the middle of page one. The top is going to be for headers and other things. So use AI to aid you in tailoring your resume. Not doing it is dumb.
