Rescheduling Interviews

Rescheduling Interviews

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Whether rescheduling an interview is acceptable depends on the company’s culture and the hiring manager. In most cases, companies appreciate applicants who don’t duck out of a job. In some cases, employers are understanding when an applicant is forced to cancel an interview due to a personal emergency, such as a family death. However, there are some situations where rescheduling an interview is completely unacceptable.

Rescheduling interviews can actually hurt the process. For one thing, the act of rescheduling is a major inconvenience for the hiring manager. With every rescheduled interview, the hiring manager loses a little interest in you because they interpret it as signifying less interest. Secondly, it creates a gap their schedule that might have been filled had you not canceled so late. Ultimately, this will damage your credibility with them. I won’t go so far as to say that rescheduling interviews shows disrespect to the hiring manager. I will say it is a delay and inconvenience to them, slowing down them getting to a decision about who to choose.
