Remember to Interview The Company, Too
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Paul Cecala posted this advice on LinkedIn, “Remember to interview the company just as much as they are interviewing you! It should be a two way conversation, not an interrogation (and it makes you stand out in the process).”
I like Paul and tossed a question to him designed to go further with his advice. “What do you think someone should ask (Did I tee that up any easier for you)?”
Of course he responded and tossed it back to me, “LOL! Rather than specific questions, here are some topics that I suggest candidates should get information on:
1. Management style of the leadership, both immediate and upstream leaders.
2. Understand the culture of the organization.
3. Learn about the financial health of the organization and the strategic plans for the department you are joining.
What about you, Jeff Altman, MSW, CCTC? How would you answer your question?”
Is This the Reason Recruiters Ignore Your LinkedIn Profile?
My response was, “As you’ve heard me say when I present at groups, I have 5 baseline questions. The first is a question to clarify any incongruence between the line of questioning during the interview and the description of the role. The second is about expectations during the first 30/60/90 days after joining. I refer to that as a throwaway question that sets up the more important one which is about success would be evaluated after a year. So many seem unable to answer that question. The 4th is about next steps and when someone might expect to hear back plus getting permission to follow up. The final one, my favorite, is whether there is anything that the interviewer has heard or not heard that gives them reason to question their being qualified. I encourage this one knowing that most interviews are not trained and are unprepared to interview someone.”
