Recession-Proofing Your Career: Follow This Principle
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
When I worked in search, someone reminded me of this principle and it is simple, elegant and true.
Recession-Proof Your Career – 7 Ways to Make Sure You Land Your Next Job Stress-Free
One way to recession-proof your career is to follow this principle–The person who gets ahead isn’t always the smartest and they certainly don’t work the hardest, although those are great qualities to have. People get ahead by being alert to opportunity. Sometimes they’re internal to their firm. More often than not, they’re external.
As a result, if you’re contacted by a recruiter, if you’re contacted by a former manager, colleague, a person internally about an opportunity, your first reaction should not, I repeat, should not be, ‘I’m happy where I am.’ Your first reaction should be to listen. Listen to what they have to say. If you’re not interested, thank them profusely, and tell them what you would be interested in. Maybe they’ll hear something.
