Prepare for The Interview
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
On LinkedIn, someone wrote, “The interview is the most crucial stage of your job search, as it is your opportunity to convince the employer that you are the right person for the job. To prepare for the interview, you need to do some homework and practice. You need to research the company, the role, and the interviewer, and anticipate the questions they might ask you. You also need to prepare your own questions to ask the interviewer, as well as your salary expectations and negotiation skills. Moreover, you need to practice your answers, your body language, and your communication skills, and dress appropriately for the interview.”

I replied, “Yes, a lot of this is true. However you also need to know what a firm is looking for since job descriptions are at best 80% accurate. That means taking time to prepare for the interview with stories that will connect the dots between the recruirement and what you;ve done AND asking the interviewer about the role they are filling at the beginning of the interview so you can adapt your prepared and practiced answers to what they are really looking for. To prepare, ask yourself, “If I were them trying to fill this position, what would I want to know and ask me about that would help me determine whether I am qualified. These two simple points are missed by most job hunters and can make a big difference to whether you get the job or not.”
