Be Prepared to Walk Away from a Job Offer
Hi! I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m referred to as The Big Game Hunter because I’ve been hunting down leaders and staff for organizations for more than 40 years.
Job hunting, like many things in life, is not easy and there are times where you may feel like you want to quit. I’m going to read a roomie poem to you. It’s R-U-M-I, if you’re not familiar with him. And I’ll simply say that don’t take this literally because it’s from a different time where certain behaviors cited in the poem are very common. Look at it from the theme. Okay? So let me just read this.
The core of masculinity does not derive from being male nor friendliness from those who console. Your grandmother says maybe you shouldn’t go to school. You look a little pale. Run when you hear that. A father’s stern slaps are better. Your bodily soul wants comforting. The severe father wants spiritual clarity. He scolds but eventually leads you to the open. Pray for a tough instructor to hear and act and stay within you. You have been busy accumulating solace. Make us afraid of how we work.
The idea behind this as relates to job hunting is that there are a lot of people who give you lots of poor babies. You know, “poor baby, poor baby,” as a way of trying to comfort you while you’re job hunting and then there are people who are going to push you and more often than not, you need the push. You need someone– a coach, a friend, a mentor, people who are going to kick you in the butt sometimes and not necessarily give you lots of, oh, sorry it’s so hard. You need the push.
So I’ll simply say find people, find a coach that can help you, that will push you to get you moving at times where you you just can’t get motivated. Find people, find a coach that will support you in tough ways because otherwise you have the opportunity to languish in your own misery and that isn’t really what you want to do.
