Organize Your Thoughts About Salary | JobSearchTV.com
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
People prepare for much of interviews . . . until questions show up about salary and turn to mush.
Stupid Networking Mistakes: Thinking Email Is Good Enough
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, a career coach who helps people perform at a great level in their careers itself. That could be managing or just on staff, it could be from the standpoint of hiring, it can be from the standpoint of your job search. I help people perform at a higher level.
This video is about salary negotiation during your search. And, you know, one thing I’ve observed, from my time in recruiting and now is that when people get to the money conversation, suddenly, emotionally, they’re in the big sweats, you know, they’re nervous, and it shows, because that’s not what you normally do.
You’re an amateur, just like with the rest of your search, where you don’t have a lot of experience job hunting.
And until you start working with a coach, and you’re doing a lot of practice, you don’t really perform that well. Salary negotiation is much the same thing. And again, you don’t perform great, because you’ve never really been involved with a lot of negotiations. And even if you’ve changed jobs multiple times before, even if you’ve been consulting, and you’re always negotiating, it’s not the same thing as when it’s a job that you want or consulting assignment, and you feel the pressure.
So my reminder to you is in much the same way as you do in other places in your life, organize your thoughts about this, like when I speak about with job hunters, and offer a framework for interviewing, I don’t do salary negotiation. I talk in terms of the overall interview itself. And I have a separate training dealing with the negotiation.
But, fundamentally, what you want to be doing is remembering every time that they’re asking you about, ‘well, how much are you currently earning, if that’s a legal question in your state, or they’re just gonna go to, ‘well, how much are you looking for? Would you be flexible?’ As soon as they’re asking any sort of financial question, they are negotiated.
Job hunters tend to open that information up without pulling back and saying, ‘yeah, yeah, I would be a little flexible, but it’s going to depend upon a variety of things that right now I don’t have information about. I don’t know the manager’s take on the role, what the expectations are, what it’s like to work here, a whole host of different things that will evaluate or I’ll evaluate over the course of interviewing and beyond. But for now, I can say yes, but understand this is something I’ll revisit later on. So don’t feel like I’m committed to doing that.’
Everyone’s negotiating on their side and job hunters, haven’t gotten their thoughts organized in advance to deal with us. Remember, if they ask about money, you’ve got to be prepared with a reply like the one I just gave you.
