Whenever I Interview, The Interviewer is So Judgemental And the Staff is So Awful

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
This type of question is usually asked by someone less experienced. The full question is, ” How come whenever I interview, the interviewer is so picky and judgmental and I never get hired, yet everywhere I go there are people who are awful at their jobs? How do these people get hired in?”

I Keep Sending Out Resumes, Following Up and Getting No Results

I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m a career coach, and I help people be more effective in their work and in their careers. That may involve job search, hiring, managing people, being more effective in the workplace, in general.

Now, somebody asked this question of me. I want to read the full thing. The title of this video is shortened a little bit to reflect the core of it. But let’s get the fullRecruiter texture. How come whenever I  interview, the interviewer is so picky and judgmental, and I never get hired? Yet everywhere I go, there are people who are awful at their jobs. How do these people get hired in?

So I’m gonna go through this question and answer it in detail. And let me start off with the end of the question. Who said they’re awful at their jobs? You? What do you know? Seriously? What do you know? Now I know you’re junior, because this is what a junior person says. Senior people would never phrase the question this way, or do it so I know you’re a beginner. What’s happened is you’ve gotten pissy because you’re getting turned down. And these people are not awful. They know what they want. They know how to evaluate and they know how to determine whether or not you appear qualified. You don’t. So you go on these interviews, and the interviewer is so picky.

Why are they picky? Because they have a job to be done and they’re there to evaluate and assess you for your qualifications for this job. They’re not there to be your friend. They are there to determine whether or not you have the requisite skills and can do the job at hand. If you can’t, they don’t want you. That makes them picky? No, that makes them pretty smart.

Again, you may not know what you need to know for these jobs. And thus, when they find that out, you’re rejected. They’re not being picky. They’re being precise about what qualifications someone needs to have in order to be qualified for the job.

So, again, these people are not awful and they’re not being picky. They know what they want. Your responsibility is to demonstrate that you have that experience and show it on the interview.
