The Big Picture

Every few years, things change in business and, with those changes, come layoffs.
Once upon a time, there were two companies—Burroughs and Univac. Then there was one—Unisys. Thousands of jobs disappeared as they did each time a company changed its business focus.
I remember when Japanese automakers started to successfully sell cars in the US and automobile workers in Detroit were laid off in large numbers.
Another time, automation replaced jobs in manufacturing.
Outsourcing to Asia caused companies to layoff knowledge workers.
NAFTA sent jobs to Mexico.
On and on.
Then, there was the subprime collapse causing jobs to be eliminated, not just in the financial services community, but across the economy. Then, on top of that, gas prices rose to record prices in 4-6 weeks.
Then, we had a pandemic causing millions to be unemployed and businesses to close.
Then there was The Great Resignation, inflation, The Great Reshuffle and then LUSRs (LinkedIn User Staff Reductions)
Businesses and consumers have cut back on spending. The news every night scares people into believing the world is going to end.
It has happened before.
It is happening now.
It will happen again
AND it will probably affect you now or in the future by jeopardizing your job.
I have no idea what the trigger will be for layoffs in the future; I just know that layoffs will happen again.
