Negotiating Mistakes

From the time of your first conversation with someone screening your background when they ask, “How much are you looking for,” they are negotiating. You don’t know anything about the job or who you’ll be working for but they want to tie you down to a number. It is important to defer and deflect when answering. If pressured, tell them, “I only know what I’ve read or been told. I haven’t met anyone yet or heard the reality of the role and expectations yet. I can give you a number but until I know more, I’m not committed to it. Can we have another conversation after that?” Does that sound unreasonable? It is their need for certainty when you have little information that is unreasonable. Stop being so compliant.
