Executive Interview Mistakes: You Don’t Demonstrate Your Leadership

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

As Marshall Goldsmith titled his book, what got you here won’t get you there. On your interviews, you don’t show up as a leader.

Job Hunting and The 10,000 Rule.

Hi. I’m Jeff Altman, people hire me for no BS job search, coaching and career advice globally, because I make finding work and succeeding at it easier.

For executive-level positions, your technical skills matter as much. What matters more is your ability to communicate, persuade, influence and demonstrate and exude confidence and diplomacy. That matters much more than your technical proficiencies.

So it would do you a lot better if you were to prepare for these interviews by focusing on your leadership and how you affected an organization rather than technical proficiencies.

To use the title of a book, what got you here won’t get you there. So, focus instead on how you’re going to represent the company within the context of the function that you’re applying for.

Now during the job interview, you won’t be asked “How do you plan to represent us,” but it’s important that you prepare because this is going to be your framework on what you’re going to lead, what strategic direction you’re going to have and how are you going to represent them as the face of the organization whether on business tv, podcasts, YouTube interviews, at conferences, So, it’s important that you prepare that way so that you can focus and show up as a leader in the job interview.

It’s rarely what you say that matters. It’s how your behavior is congruent with their image of someone in those milieu presenting the message. And thus, if you have examples of media appearances, review them on YouTube or elsewhere so they are fresh in your mind.
