Negotiate with Confidence and Respect
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
LinkedIn’s thinking is, “Once you have decided on your counteroffer and strategy, it’s time to negotiate with confidence and respect. Start by highlighting your qualifications, achievements, and value to the company. Then, present your counteroffer and explain why it is reasonable and justified based on your research and expectations. Avoid being confrontational, emotional, or defensive. Instead, be polite, professional, and positive. Show that you are flexible and open to finding a mutually beneficial solution.”
What’s the Best Question to Ask at the End of an Interview?
As has been said in a movie, “It’s not personal. It’s business.” Flexibility may not be the right tact to take. Firmness may be the right way to approach this. If you are asked to concede a point, make sure they are, too. Otherwise, you are giving away YOUR leverage and not receiving anything in return. Hire someone to talk this through with so you are not on an island without a sounding board who has your interests at heart, has experience doing this, and can talk you through the pros, cons, and potential consequences.
