Maybe You’re Working for the Wrong Type of Company
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
When people look for work, they often neglect where a company is on its lifecycle and look purely at the job and the tasks associated with it. I refer to a conversation I had with Stever Robbins. This is a link to it: https://youtu.be/EdZc_sKNI-4
Tough Interview Questions for Managers: How Do You Approach an Employee About a Performance Issue?
Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, and people hire me for no BS career advice globally. That can be involved with the job search, hiring more effectively, management, leadership, career transition, and dealing with workplace issues.
I did an interview with a man named Stever Robbins, and Stever spoke about three different types of organizations, and how people wind up working in the wrong firms. I’ll have a link in the show notes to the full interview. But I just want to pose this question for you.
Maybe you’re working with a firm at the wrong stage of the lifecycle for what suits you and your personality. For example, if you’re an individual who is driven, motivated, likes doing creative work, wants to feel inspired all the time, wants to do lots of different things concurrently, small firms tend to be best for you. You may be working for a more mature firm, or an enterprise organization that doesn’t really suit you.
Conversely, you could be very process driven, in which case, the entrepreneurial firm really isn’t right for you because you’d want to be more task-oriented, you’d want to do more stuff that’s procedurally oriented.
Tough Interview Questions for Managers: What Qualities Are Most Important When Managing a Team
For a firm that is in the middle between these two, are you someone who can feel comfortable working for an organization that is trying to mature, is converting from an entrepreneurial environment to more standards, and is becoming larger? And thus, if you’re in one extreme or the other, it’s not really the right fit for you because you’re more comfortable in an explosive environment, or in a more mature environment. Maybe it isn’t the type of work. Maybe it’s the type of organization that’s an issue for you.
I’ll have the link to the Stever interview in the show notes. Watch it. It’s 20 minutes. Maybe the first seven or eight minutes relate to this. We cover a lot of interesting material in this conversation.
