Manage Your Emotions In a Negotiation

LinkedIn asked for input for an article about salary negotiation. The scenario they posed was, “Salary negotiations can trigger strong emotions, such as anxiety, frustration, anger, or disappointment. These emotions can cloud your judgment, impair your communication, and damage your relationship with the team. To cope with your emotions, you need to manage them effectively. “
My response is limited to 750 characters or less. Before editing to accomodate that limit, I wrote: Sometimes you will be negotiating with your future boss. Sometimes, it will be with someone from talent acquisition. Line up a team of trusted advisers who will support you during the negotiation. Always remember that it is business, not personal when they offer less than what you hope for. If that happens, don’t respond. Sit in silence for a few moments and let the silence signal your disappointment with their offer. Tell them you would like to think about it and will circle back with a response. Set up a video meeting with your advisers to discuss the offer, what you’ve been told and to formulate a response. Remember, while you’re doing that, they are getting worried and formulating a response. You and your advisers will figure out a strategy and tactics to respond with.’
