LinkedIn For Recent College Graduates | JobSearchTV.com

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter discusses several effective ways for using LinkedIn as a recent college graduate.
Misconceptions College Grads Have About Job Hunting
I want to talk to you as a recent graduate who’s trying to find work maybe the first job other than the internship about a couple of ways that you can use LinkedIn more effectively. I know LinkedIn looks pretty boring to you in dull and it is yet that’s the fact of the matter it is but it’s the tool of choice in the workforce different than Facebook and others. Now Facebook . . . I know you know you can reach out to you all your connections on Facebook and elsewhere and ask them for advice, maybe an introduction, maybe talk with them about how they found work etc etc. But LinkedIn, I want you to think of differently. I want you to think of putting yourself in the position of connecting with more people. So, for example one of the things that you can do on LinkedIn is join a group that relates to a university that you’re going to have tons of grads over the course of years who are associated with that university. So, for example, I got my masters from Fordham. Now I can join the Fordham University Linkedin group. I could join one related to my Master’s program (I have a Masters in Social Work) and start networking with people there if I were looking for a job that would leverage my MSW. For you, in addition to looking at that adjoining one for your university, think of joining groups or join groups I should say to related to the field that you want to get entry into.
So for example if you’ve graduated in finance, you look for finance-related groups that deal with your specific area of interest. Accounting, the same thing, business technology, maybe something related to a firm that you want to join. For example if you want to join a Microsoft related group for people who have worked at Microsoft, they may restrict it to Microsoft members. Maybe not. But start looking at ways that you can network beyond simply a couple of different people and reach out to them and just simply say, “Hi! I’m a recent grad. I’m looking for some input. Can I get a few minutes of your time to talk with you about what it’s like the work at . . . “whatever the firm is and try to work on developing relationships through informational interviews. I have other videos and a course that deal with informational interviews and how to approach them. You can find them on Youtube or through my website which is TheBigGameHunter.us
