Life Lessons from Ferris Buehler’s Day Off

I work with a lot of rules followers. I recognize them because I’ve spent a lot of my life being trained to conform. So when Ferris Buehler says, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it,” it rings true for me.
After all, I am writing this at 8 PM on a day that started at 4 AM. I was outside once today to walk to my mailbox after forgetting that there was no mail delivery today (January 2, 2023).
I stopped to look around to spend a little time with my wife. Not enough.
Yet it isn’t Ferris who says the most important line of the movie. It is his friend, Cameron, who he manipulates into letting him “borrow” his father’s prized car which he promptly destroys after an all-day adventure Cameron misses much of because he is afraid of what might happen to the car.
“I am not going to sit on my ass as the events that affect me unfold to determine the course of my life. I’m going to take a stand. I’m going to defend it. Right or wrong, I’m going to defend it,” Cameron says.
So many people live in a chicken coop of their own making. Or like elephant training where young elephants are chained to a stake and even after the stake is removed, act like the stake still holds them to the spot.
