EP 980 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter turns a recent discussion with a job hunter into a lesson that most job hunters need to learn.
Last week, I received a call from a friend of mine, a therapist, talking about someone who works with, and he referred them to be for coaching work. He wanted me to critique his resume... I was going to take good care of the guy. He writes to me we schedule a time to speak. I said, "send me a copy of your resume." I took a look at the resume and on his resume. He's been out of work for 3 1/2 or 4 years. The therapist is also told me that he is someone who has been doing daytrading. However, if you submit a resume to me where he's been out of work for 3 1/2 or 4 years. The referral blew off the time to speak to me, telling me, "I'm looking for you to be a recruiter for me." He said a whole bunch of nonsense. I'll simply say that for most of you, you even know what you don't know in job hunting , and you need to get good advice. It may be what you don't know is that your resume is mediocre. Maybe, what you don't know is that you don't interview particularly well. Whatever it is, you just don't know it because you're not in these trenches very often. You think you can do this and you believe you can get it from (and you can) but do you really want to fumble around a lot until you learned through enough smacks in the face from employers that don't want to have you back for a 2nd interview? Or don't want to hire you? Or don't even interview you because resume sucks? I just simply say that learn what you need to proactively. Yes, I do coaching; I do resume critiques; I do LinkedIn profile critiques a whole bunch of other stuff. You can find out about it. My website which is www.thebiggamehunter.us. What I will say is that the most important thing I'll tell you here is learn what you don't know from people who know it and learned quickly. Why go through the agony of your wife/husband/partner saying, "So, how's it going?" "Under getting any results." "Oh, that is awful! You're obviously not working hard enough." And you are not! That's because you are not learning what you don't know. In your job, they kind of tell you that right away. They said you to training. They diverge you do other things where they don't really need you to do those kind of things that you don't really know. But, in your job search, that is on you. Again, learn what you don't know FAST! Do it before you even start the job search.
