Good Lord. My mother needs to watch this. She did the exact same thing. Stopped working at 60 and now she’s almost 71 and wants to start working again. She thinks that all she has to do is write a resume (with an 11 year gap in it) and get a job. I’m 45 years old and I’m getting a VERY rude awakening about ageism, so I can only imagine what a 71 year old will have to deal with who hasn’t worked in 11 years. To make it worse, she isn’t very open-minded. I printed a bunch of senior-friendly job ads from companies who like hiring older workers. She blew me off. She has too much pride to apply for a senior-friendly job. She wants to apply for the jobs that the 20 and 30 and 40 year olds are applying for. She thinks that her college degree and her Miss Clairol is all she needs to compete. Don’t get me wrong. I hope she finds what she wants. But every time I call her, she’s waking up from a nap. So, I’m not sure if she’s going to be able to keep up with a demanding corporate job even if she does land one, which is highly unlikely. She gets social security and a pension from the city. She doesn’t need a stressful corporate job. But like I said, senior-friendly jobs seem to be beneath her.
