Knowing When It’s Time | Career Angles

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

A friend of mine has owned the restaurant for five years. It has been eating him up for a long time. His weight is down. He looks perpetually exhausted. I triedThe missing ingredient to help him take a little bit of time away from the restaurant but it’s been hard for him to do that.

He’s made changes to it to draw more people in and at the same time, the very thing that drew him to the field, his love of food and preparing it, has been eroded by the necessities wrote about of running a business. He is really in the kitchen anymore.

Two days ago, I read that he had sold the restaurant and its property to someone he knew. He is going to keep his auxiliary restaurant but the main one was closing. I was happy for him and told him that when I stopped in yesterday.

A lifetime isn’t a long time. Often, we waste too much time in battles that are unwinnable, conflicted buyer choices and hitting our heads against the same brick wall. It’s as though we don’t realize that the wall isn’t going to move after we hit our head against it 100 times.

We get conflicting messages about what to do. There is the message we get of salespeople who are failures because they gave up at the 1 yard line when someone else continued on and score the touchdown. There is also the message that you have to know when to hold’em and know when to fold’em and don’t want to walk away and went to run.

The truth is we never know when to do any of these things. We just have to understand what our soul and spirit is telling us to do and act on it.
