Designing Career Experiments

A strong attachment to your current job, maybe hurting you professionally. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS coaching and career advice globally. That can relate to anything that’s career-related– job search, hiring more effectively, managing and leading better, career transitions, dealing with workplace issues, and they do it because I make things easier for them. I work for you. I don’t work for a company that’s paying me a lot of money Changing careersto deliver you for a job or make you compliant with their behavior.

Strong attachment. Well, let me just back up for a second. In the context of Buddhist teachings, attachment refers to the mental and emotional clinging or grasping for people, things or  experiences that causes suffering and impedes spiritual growth. Let me bring it into a more common language, which is, many of you may have a deep sense of loyalty and commitment to your current employer and role.

However, there are important reasons why it may come time or may be time to reevaluate your current career path. So this relates to the idea of career stagnation. When an individual becomes complacent in their current job, and stops looking for new opportunities and growth, this can lead to a lack of advancement and limit your earnings potential. Additionally, it can create a sense of dissatisfaction and uneasiness, and unhappiness in your career. Strong attachment to your current job often makes it hard for employees to take on new roles, responsibilities, and challenges, which can lead to boredom, lack of motivation, and feelings of burnout.

One of the biggest reasons why your strong attachment to your current role is hurting you professionally is that going to limit your exposure to new things. Employers and recruiters often look for people with a diverse range of experiences and skills. And staying in the same job for too long can make you less attractive to other companies. By not broadening your experiences and skill set, you may miss out on better paying and more fulfilling opportunities.

Finding The Career That Fits You

When I worked in recruiting, I’d have clients say to me about someone who had worked at one organization for too long a period of time, They’d say “they know how it’s done there. But they don’t necessarily know how it’s done elsewhere, and can’t bring perspective to situations. That’s where it really hurts you. You become limited in your thinking to doing how it’s, it’s done in this one organization, and not thinking beyond that.

Another reason why your attachment to your current job is hurting you professionally, it can prevent you from developing a strong personal brand. And I’ll just simply define personal branding as a unique combination of skills, experiences, and values that make you stand out as a professional. By staying in a role for too long, you may not be developing skills and experiences necessary to create a real brand or reputation, which can make it hard for you to stand out by comparison to others when trying to win new jobs or roles.

Additionally, your strong attachment to the current job can also lead to lack of work-life balance. You become too committed to your current job. You neglect other important aspects of your life such as family, friends, and hobbies, which can lead to burnout, lack of motivation in your career, and more. Strong attachment can make it hard to switch off from work. And that will hurt us in so many different areas. I know it has me at times.

So what can you do to break free? Simple. The first step is to take a step back and evaluate your current role. Are you really happy and fulfilled in your current job? Are you being challenged and growing professionally? If not, it may be time to start exploring other opportunities. Next, start networking and building relationships with people in your industry. Start going to industry events and connect with people on LinkedIn. And then not just simply connect but interact with people on LinkedIn. This will help you get exposure to new opportunities and learn about new roles and companies, networking and helping you stay informed of industry trends and learn about opportunities.

Set specific goals and create a plan to achieve them, which can include taking on new responsibilities in your current role, pursuing additional education or training or even considering a career change. A clear career path will help you stay focused, motivated, and on track to achieving your goals.

To sum up, you’re strong attachment to your current job can hurt you professionally in many ways. It can limit your exposure to new opportunities, prevent you from developing a strong brand and lead to a lack of work-life balance, take a step back and evaluate your current role networking, build relationships and create a plan for your career, your career development, so you can break free from your attachment and achieve success in your career. And if you think about what I’ve been talking about, this is about taking ownership of your life instead of outsourcing it to an employer.
