Is Changing Careers a Good Idea? | JobSearchTV.com

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

I know changing careers evokes fear that results in paralysis for many people. But is it a good idea? Yes, if you do things to minimize risk.

4 Things to Consider When Changing Careers

Is changing careers a good idea? I think so. And I have a few provisos to it. Number one is often, people leap from a frying pan into a fryer. What do I mean by that? They think they like the new career but they haven’t done anything to really research it. They haven’t spoken to anyone. They haven’t shadowed anyone. They haven’t tried doing anything on the side related to the new career. They just have an idea that this is going to be better for them than what what they’re doing now.

Now, if you’re in a job that you hate, maybe it’s the job. Maybe it’s the firm that you’re working for that’s the issue. What has changed for you, based upon the previous organization you’ve worked in versus the one that you’re in now? Maybe it’s the employer, and thus, maybe the issue isn’t the career? Maybe it’s the firm that you’re working for? I don’t know that answer, because I don’t know you. But I do know that sometimes that’s the solution for people– doing what they’re doing elsewhere.

However, if that doesn’t work for you, then start exploring other options. ‘But I don’t know what to do.’ Yes, you do. You’re just afraid to acknowledge it. And if you’re not sure, I’ll have a link in the show notes to one of these industrial psychology tests that will allow you to, in the premium version, get recommendations of new careers for you.

The Right Way to Look at Career Planning

But I’ll just simply say, start looking at other options. If you’re thinking about this, that’s the first thing. I’ll tell you, if you’re thinking about this, start looking at other options, including a job change, if you think that might cure things. But is it a good idea? Absolutely. And don’t make money stand in the way.

‘But I make $250,000, I’ll have to go back to making $70.’ That’s a choice you’ll have to make. And you’ll have to measure whether or not your happiness is worth that price. And I understand you may have expenses that precludes you from doing that. That’s the choice I made in my life.

I was going to grad school, and met my wife there. I was doing very well in my career in search. I postponed the career transition till later, so that we could get married, do the house, have a child, etc. And later on, I returned into the career change to coaching.

So, sometimes this may not be the right time AND you can do the work now, in order to prepare yourself for later. But it all starts off with an investigation of what it’s really like to work in that new field so that you’re not just flying in with the idea that this is going to be better. You know much more clearly whether it is.
