Interview Anxiety? How to Stay Cool Under Pressure
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Job interviews can make even the most qualified candidates anxious. But walking in with confidence and a cool head can help you stand out from the pack. Here’s how to get a grip on those pre-interview jitters and emotionally prepare to shine.
First, acknowledge the nerves are normal. Everyone feels interview anxiety, so don’t beat yourself up. A bit of adrenaline can even sharpen your focus. Just don’t let anxiety spiral out of control.
If you feel tremendously nervous, use deep breathing techniques. Slow, deep breaths from your diaphragm combat shallow “chest breathing” that fuels anxiety. Inhale slowly through your nose, feeling your belly expand. Exhale slowly through pursed lips. Repeat until you feel calmer.
Also, try progressive muscle relaxation. Starting with your toes, tense then relax each muscle group up your body. This melting away of physical tension relieves mental stress too.
Visualization is another effective strategy. Picture yourself acing the interview with confidence and poise. See the interviewer smiling and shaking your hand. This mental rehearsal primes you for success.
Remember, interviews take practice. Even if you flub the first few, each one makes you more seasoned. With experience, your emotional mastery will grow.
Come prepared with your qualifications and credentials, but don’t underestimate the power of entering an interview feeling centered, secure and ready to shine. With the right emotional readiness, you can stand out from the competition and win the job you love.
