This is a question that would be asked of someone at a manager level above. I offer you the honest answer as well as how to package it for the person asking it.

If hired, what would you want to accomplish? What would you do during your first 90 days? I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm a career and leadership coach. I work with people and organizations to help them be more effective with a job search, hiring better, managing and leading, and resolving workplace related issues.

Now, this is a question really for those of you who are managers or above. And I would say, the true answer is, "I don't know what I'm stepping into. I know what you're telling me. But I'm not quite sure what I'm stepping into, and what's been committed to. what the users need, etc, itself. And thus, the idea becomes initially want to confirm what the needs are, and the expectations for the people that you're there serving."

And in certain situations, you're being told, "This is what we need you to get done, and, thus, you feed it back to them. And it becomes the "how you're going to do it." And then you talk about meeting with all the people that you'd be serving, understanding what their preferences are. What they liked about your predecessor; what they didn't care for. You know, what worked and what didn't work in the relationship so this way, you can keep the things that you know that they like, and change the things that you know, that they don't like.

But fundamentally, I'm talking to you now, and you really don't know what you're stepping into. I know what HR is telling you, I know what the hiring manager is telling you. But that doesn't mean that's the reality to it. So you've got to test that. And you've got to say to them, have the courage to say to them, "I hear what you're saying about what your expectations are. But I have no idea what the capabilities of my team are going to be. I have no idea of what the reality is, is going to be working with this particular user group, and how reasonable or unreasonable they are. So, I'm going to test that out initially before I really kick off. And once I get get involved, I've obviously got to have already met with my team, understood what their capabilities are, developed a relationship with them, where they have an understanding of my expectations, and I have an understanding of their capabilities. And, if there's a disconnect, we've got to rework everything, so that we can deliver what it is people want. See where I'm going with this?
