How recruiters steal your top performers. Here’s an easy one, you give hurtful feedback. You expect perfection out of your people. There’s no room for flaws. It’s like zero-defect manufacturing. You don’t hold yourself up to that standard, but you hold them up to it, and thus you hurt them.
When you give feedback, the focus, the most time is spent on criticism. Why do you think they get hurt? Because they hear the time that you spend on criticism, and they go, ‘I don’t think I like this.’
So the long and the short of it is you make the mistake of spending your 45-minute feedback session with someone focused on their flaws, and not on the great things they do.
