How Long Are Second Interviews? | JobSearchTV.com

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

I need to plan my day and want to know how long it will be.

Can Negotiating Salary Backfire?

So how long are second interviews? The correct answer is they go as long as they need to go. But I know that’s not what you’re looking for. You want a definitive amount of time.

So the way that out is when they call you to schedule, the second interview, or the third, or any interview, just simply ask, “how much time should I set aside for this,” and then pad it with an extra 15 minutes, because sometimes the flow of the conversation is going so well, you don’t want to abruptly end it because you have something else booked. You want to continue with that flow and give them a little bit of extra space.

Now, the result winds up being sometimes they’re going to go a little bit long. And let’s say you booked 45 minutes or set aside 45 minutes, and they were at the 40 minute mark. They told you a half hour. What do you do? And the answer is, when you get to that point, about 40 minutes in, you’ll say to them, “You know, when I was asked to schedule this,  I was told it would be a 30 minute conversation. And we’re at around the 40 minute mark, which is great. I’m really enjoying this, but I have something booked in five minutes.

“Would you like to reschedule a second conversation? Would you like to schedule a second conversation and continue this one and get all your questions answered?” They may say no, I really have enough, but I was enjoying it too.” Or they may say, “Yeah, I’d like to do that,” and just book the next interview then.

How long will it take? As long as they need to but ask them beforehand how much time you should set aside.

Should I Confirm an Interview?
