How Does Someone Convey They Have Critical Soft Skills?
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Terrence H. Seamon is a coach I’ve known for many years. He asked, “We have a “soft skills” dilemma.
Many career experts are saying, Take the soft skills off the resume.
Yet, surveys continue to emphasize the importance of such soft skills as communication, listening, customer service, collaboration, adaptability, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, creativity, problem-solving, and the ability to make an effective presentation.
How does a candidate convey that they have strength in critical soft skills areas that employers want?
Any ideas?”
I replied, “Show, don’t tell, is how I coach people.
It is like seeing “Innovative Leader” on a resume. I will always ask them to tell me about something innovative they did. Usually, it is something that has been done by many others.
The same is true of soft skills. IMO, writing it in a resume is something people roll their eyes over and look for the example which usually isn’t in the resume.
In the interview, it is much easier to be believable about soft skills than in a resume.”
The Recruiter Said “Hold Tight.” When Should I Call?
