Heroes

My heroes are passing. I recorded this a few years ago.

Is It OK To Follow Up a Week After The Interview?

This is the No BS Coaching Advice Podcast, Episode 162. I’m your host Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and welcome. I like to spend some time every week talking with you about some aspect of life, the universe and everything.

SEGMENT 1. And today’s show is one where I was watching a reality show this weekend. You know, the classic cooking show. Let’s find this failing restaurant. Let’s fix it up. And of course we have the big reveal at the end. Oh, it’s gorgeous. Oh, how wonderful and everyone loves the new menu. And our chef owner is talking to the camera at the end and says something absolutely wonderful.

He says, “heroes are hard to come by in this day and age,” and then goes on to praise our our celebrity chef. Folks, I’ll just simply say nothing could be truer than that remark. We have ruined any possibility that anyone could ever be a hero by constantly looking at the flaws in them, and never seeing the positive. It’s as though we feel better if we cut them down to size, OUR size, rather than saying, “you know, everyone is flawed–you, me, this person. We’re all flawed in one way or another. What’s the good that they do? Have they hurt anyone? If they have, they deserve to get cut down to size?

Are they imperfect? You bet! So am I. But, man, they’ve done something great. And let’s spend a little bit of time looking at the heroes in our life, finding heroes in our lives, and frankly, aspiring to be heroes in other’s lives.

SEGMENT 2. This weekend we all heard of the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant and his daughter. For many, Kobe was a hero, particularly if you were in that sport. He made time for people. People admired his fierceness on the court. He was a great basketball player, and apparently an even better father.

I’ll simply say, a flawed man. You know, earlier in his life, he was accused of rape. I have no idea if it’s true. If anything, this is one of those instances where I believed her. And here’s a man who came back from the, shall we say “mistake” he made the mistake that hurt someone else and pulled himself together and became a spectacular athlete and human being.

Folks. If there’s any example of a hero for so many, Kobe Bryant is a man like that. And there are Others just like him– men and women who’ve made terrible mistakes, and yet came back to punctuate their life in a great way. Can we forgive? That’s up to you. I’m not going to tell you to forgive him. Your choice. But I’ll simply say others have, and he holds a special place for them, as the others that you might struggle to forgive, might hold a special place for others. It is hard to be a hero. Can you become a hero for others? Can you help others and receive that admiration that you would deserve if you would only extend yourself? Give it a shot, be great.

How Can They Catch You Bluffing?

SEGMENT 3. Robert Frost wrote a wonderful poem with a title that’s long, but gorgeous. “How hard is it to keep from being king when it is within you, and in this situation,” he wrote. Folks, many of you keep yourself from being king or queen by holding back, resisting being who your natural state is, who you truly are.

Why? Why is it? Because you’re afraid of being “executed,” because you stuck your head up like a tall poppy and are afraid to having it cut off. You can’t really help yourself and be the person that you’re meant to be.

Go out there and be a hero for others.
