Are you someone who falls prey to FOBO?

FOBO. What the heck is FOBO? I know about FOMO, which is fear of missing out what the heck is FOBO, particularly, in the context of hiring? I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I coach people and organizations helping you be more effective.

FOBO fear of a better option. You're interviewing people. This person is good, but maybe there's someone else out there, who's even better. How long are you going to play with that? How long are you going to keep looking at resumes, talking to people, involving your staff?

You know, right now we're in the middle of the COVID crisis, and it's starting to open up and there are millions of people there are going to be available in the market momentarily. How many people do you want to interview? Why don't you just start getting things off your plate and bringing people back, bring new people on board so you can start moving on to the things that you need incrementally.

What would that 1% do for you in the context of what you need done? Seriously. What would that 1% difference help you with? Now? I'm sure you could rattle off some things, but is it worth all the manpower that you're going to put into this? All the labor skills to evaluate and assess people?

Most people, when they think about it for a second, realize that it isn't, but if you're one of the ones who does think so give yourself a timetable. You have to start making decisions and move forward. So this way you can get stuff done, and get your people back to what they need to get done. That's because every hour that you're taking interviewing people, is an hour for them away from what they need to do to get things done and you're going to judge them harshly.

If you . . . if they don't get things done that you need done, and it's your fault, because you couldn't make a decision. See FOBO is a version of procrastination. It's the "maybe that person's better. What about this one?" Back and forth? Maybe there's someone else. Just make the decision.
