Finding a Job With a Startup: Interview Preparation

Finding a Job With a Startup: Interview Preparation

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Understanding The Interviewer

If you are in the process of looking for a job at a startup, it is important to prepare for the interview. While interviewers don’t necessarily want to know your personal history, they do want to know how you plan to apply your skills to their company. In addition to knowing how you can help them, you should also know what your relevant work experience is, what your skills are, as well as your strengths.

Unlike large corporations, startups usually have limited resources and funds and therefore prioritize growth. Startups are looking for employees who are self-directed and who can work independently, with little supervision. Your work experience can relate to their mission, and you can highlight any relevant experience you may have. You should also be prepared to explain why you dislike the product, if applicable. These are just a few of the questions hiring managers may ask during the interview.

While preparing for your interview, remember to avoid showing off or appearing arrogant! The startup world is very different than big corporations, and startups will be wary of hiring career employees. Instead, try to immerse yourself in the culture. The startup environment moves fast and pricing and products can change frequently. Therefore, you must be someone who embraces change and can adapt quickly to these changes. Also, remember that you should also consider the benefits of working for a startup compared to a big corporation.

The key to succeeding at an interview for a startup is to familiarize yourself with the culture of the startup company. Read up on its mission, founders, and most recent news and events, as well as those of the people in your group. Learn about the jargon and culture of the company. This will help you connect with the challenges the startup faces and how to position yourself as a solution to their problems. This will also help you gain a valuable perspective on the startup world.

After the interview, follow up with an email or text to show gratitude and professionalism. Make sure to highlight the key points from the conversation. It will also show that you are interested in the position and give you an opportunity to highlight your strengths related to the role.
