An Interview Preparation Tip | JobSearchTV.com


I offer a simple way to prepare for the standard interview and the behavioral job interview.

Summary

Today, I want to talk with you about interview preparation trick that works whether you receive a behavioral interview or 1 of the standard ones with those obnoxious questions.

Just to illustrate with behavioral interviews, they are going to start off with language along the lines of, "Tell me about a time when you…"It's kind of like mutual funds… If they start out by saying, "Tell me about a time when you…" They are looking for examples. Because, like a mutual fund, they are trying to evaluate past performance and predict future outcomes. That's what the trying to do with behavioral interview.

Even with the standard 1 when they ask you dumb questions, they are looking for much the same thing. They just don't say it. The looking for the same type of answer.

Here's the tip. It doesn't matter with your rookie trying to get your 1st job, an experienced person who Is trying to find another job, or veteran individual. the C suite. Here's what you do in advance.

Look for 3 things that are key to the role. For example, with the rookie, they talk about a hard-working individual who is reliable, but they are really looking for is a self-starter. For the "self starter stuff,," think of it this way. They are looking for examples of instances, stories that you can tell about how you step into a role and, without a lot of direction, picked up the baton and just running with. Come up with 2 examples of that that you can use in the interview.

For the experienced person, you may be looking at skills that they are looking for. They may be looking at leadership stuff. again, 2 examples of things that you tell along these lines that you can use as an example, on your interview. Experienced people generally have an idea what they are walking into but I'm so that encourage you to ask what I call the single best question you should ask on any interview. That question very simply, is asked before the real interview starts. I want you to speak 1st. Say something to the effect of, "Thanks for making time to speak with me today. I recall from the advertisement (or from the search firm, my conversation with so-and-so, whatever it is from wherever it is that you learned about the job) what the position is, but I'd like to hear from you and get your take on it. What you tell me about the roles you see and what I can to help?"

Now that they have defined it for you, you can speak about what you've done that matters to them and, knowing the true veteran individual, yes, I'm sure you do a certain amount of preparation in advance based upon what you been told, but you have the capacity to switch gears pretty quickly and adapt to what you hear on the spot. That's because (1) I want to just talk about what you've done. I want to talk about what you've done that matters to them.
(2) , I want you to have stories in your mind or instances where you can demonstrate that which they are looking for. Experienced individuals, managers, people operating the C suite are used to adapting. You guys are used to dancing on your feet. Recognize that you have to think quickly for examples. Think of one right away. My experience tells me the most you can come up with the 2nd 1 pretty quickly in order to demonstrate your experience of relates to them.

Again, always have two stories in place to illustrate every point that matters to the employer that is evaluating you.That's how you really prepare an advantage yourself on a behavioral interview or any interview for that matter.

I thought this quote from defensive coach, Joe Whitt of the Green Bay Packers was terrific.

Summary

I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I coach people and I do one-on-one coaching around job search and career issues. I do leadership coaching once people are in new roles or while they're running an existing role and struggling with different things.
I was listening to a podcast this morning. I listen to one podcast that's a sports show– – Simms and Lefcoe. They mentioned the quote from a guy named Joe Whitt. He's a coach who handles the defensive pass game and quarterbacks for the Green Bay Packers. Now, I want to talk with you in the context of this quote about what its meaning is for you as a job hunter.
Understand football is a violent game. We all know that. People hit one another at incredible speed. He said, "you can't tell the difference between a confused player and a coward because they both move slowly."
Wow, because you move slowly, you look like a coward. Now, let me translate that. When you don't know what you're doing, when you don't know the plays, you don't go all out. The result winds up being that you kind of look tentative, like a coward might under the similar circumstances.
They both appear from the outside like the same type of person but ,in one case, it's from fear. inthe other case,It's I just don't quite know what I'm doing.
Let's fast-forward to you as a job hunter. You're going on an interview and you're not prepared. You haven't looked at the LinkedIn profile of the person that you're meeting with.
You haven't done anything to rehearse answers to predictable questions that you're going to get on the interview. You haven't looked at the job description since the appointment was scheduled for you so it's not fresh in your mind. You haven't watched my video about the best question to ask on any interview ()I think it might be called the single best question.you should ask on any interview. () You don't know anything other than how to talk about what you've done. And, in that regard, you could appear no different than every other person walking in. How do you stand out on those circumstances? You're not prepared! You don't know the plays!
So, I want to encourage you that before you go on. Interviews, you have to rehearse answers to the predictable questions. You can be asking so that this way you don't look like every other person who's walked in the door winging it trying to figure things out as they go along you have great preparation under your belt and you can deliver and perform at a high level.

EP 1220 This next step of your interview preparation is a step between getting your resume ready and interviewing.

Summary

I’ll use a story to illustrate. When my son was really young and it was time to go to bed, he would often ask me to tell him a story.

“Daddy!” I knew he was stalling before going to sleep. “Tell me a story!” One day, I looked over at his nightstand and saw a dollar bill. I held it up to him and said:

“Today, I’m going to tell you story about Bill.” We went on this journey around the world where I would tell a story about Bill … Basically, I was talking about how money moves around the world. Every sentence I ended with ended with an “ill.”

“So, Bill traveled everywhere. He was in a restroom one day and he ate something that he care for and suddenly became . . . My son would say, “Ill!” And it would go on from there, until we got to the point where Bill died and suddenly he needed a “will.” So, we would go on like this.

Stories have a unique way of affecting us and engaging us and that's true in your interviews, too. I want to encourage you, you have got a resume and you be sending it out and some firm is going to call you for an interview,

I want you to look at your resume and what you describe there and I want you to be thinking of stories related to the role, responsibilities accomplishments and such. The format. I want you to think in terms of is

What was the problem that you faced?
What action did you take?
What results did you get?
If you can, the metrics for what you accomplished in terms of dollars saved dollars and dollars earned

I was interviewing a guest on “Job Search Radio” who referred to it as the PAR method. I said, “it's actually Italian. It’s actually PARM.”

Think in terms of comparing yourself by money saved or money earned is the metrics, and, if you are not in a role where you can speak about that, like you are in administrative assistant or you work on a helpdesk, what have you, you can speak in terms of how you handled something 13% more effectively or handle more tickets by 27% than other call center operators did for example.

So, there's always a way of describing it but it starts off with Problem-Action-Result-Metrics. When all is said and done, this is the part of your preparation for your interview that you can do in advance and just jot it down. Become familiar with it so that, in this way, when you get to the first phone interview, a screening call (but is an interview, nonetheless) and they talk with you, “tell me about what you did on the last . . . And they will ask you about something on your resume, “Well, I dealt with a situation where we had a problem with such and such.” Lay out the story of what the issues were. You can just listen to them become engaged. Then, you talk about, “So, I was asked to step in and do such and such.” So, you talk about what actions you did. You mobilized a group people. You talked with the afflicted party. You understood what their needs were and where the deficiencies work, you go on and on and on. Then, you talk about the results that came about from this and how it helped improve results by 70% . . . 2 million dollars. Whatever it was.

Think in terms of PARM

It’s Not Enough | JobSearchTV.com


Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter points out that sports teams don’t just attend classes to learn how to play or sit around thinking about their performance. They practice. You should, too.

Summary

When sports teams practice for their games, they don't just simply read playbooks or sit in classes or think about how they're going to perform. They actually do it. They get out on the practice field. They get out on the court, if it's basketball, they play five on five against the other team they are practicing their plays. If it's football, they’re up against the defensive unit or if they’re the defense, they are up against an offense that is designed to allow these teams to practice what they actually learn.

Why is it any different with you? Why do you think all you need to do is watch these videos that I do or read a couple of articles or think about your answers and think that's enough? It isn’t.

You need to hear your answers as other people would hear your answers before you have to give them for real. In this way, you get the mistakes out early so that this way, you can correct them before you actually interview for that job you really want so that you don't blow it because you’re just not practiced enough.

So, my simple advice for you for today is find some people that you know and trust who are capable of giving you a mock interview. Sit down with them. Have them ask you 40 or 50 questions. Maybe, you go so far as to record your answers and listen to what you say. Don't listen to your tone of voice right away because everyone thinks that their voice sounds weird and terrible. It doesn't. It is just something in how we hear things given our auditory canals that cause some complications.

But, when all is said and done, listen to your content. See if you sound believable. Get feedback from them, especially if you they are in your field, especially if they know what they're talking about vis-à-vis you and your experience.

Get a coach. Have a coach do a mock interview with you. Schedule some time on their calendar to spend a 1/2 hour with you and go through some questions. You also so find your progress on interviews will grow exponentially and you will avoid some of the trial and error that’s causing you to fail some of your interviews.

In this video. Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter tells you exactly what to do before your job interview do that you’re ready to roll when it starts.

Summary

Today, I want to talk with you about job interviewing up until the point the interview starts. Everything you need to do to set yourself up properly in order to perform well.

Let's assume you have an interview scheduled. The 1st thing I will tell you to do is to do some research of about the firm. No employer likes a job applicant who arrives at an interview and says, "So, tell me about your company what it does." It's ridiculous. Ever hear this thing called the web? Go unwanted find out about the firm and what it does. Look up the individual that you need through LinkedIn. Do a Google search. Do some homework about that individual CF since what their background is.

Then, on the day of the interview, arrived a few minutes early. Why? Real simple.. You want to set your mind in the proper frame so that you can perform well. If it's hot out, you want to cool off because no one wants to shake hands with someone with sweaty palms. If it's cold out, you don't want to shake hands with hands like a popsicle. They clearly don't. Warm up, cool off, depending upon the weather. Then, invariably you walk into the building and greeted by a receptionist who invariably says, "Hi. Can I help you?"

"I have a 230 appointment to see so-and-so."

They will invite you to have a seat for minute and wait. Sit facing the greatest number of entry points to the room so that you can see someone approaching you. Years ago, I remember having a meeting at a bank. It was summer the reception who had an interview scheduled with someone. There were 2 entryways into the reception. This person pick the wrong one; they should have been seated facing where both doorways open up so that they wouldn't be surprised; instead, this person had their back to 1 of the doors and, of course, this is where their interview was going to emerge from.

It was a rainy day. They had overcoat, an umbrella, a copy of the New York Times and their briefcase. They were intently reading the newspaper, the name was called. They were startled. They try to pick up the newspaper, pick up the raincoat and fold it over there arm, put their umbrella there. Pick up the briefcase, shake hands... They were startled kind of flustered. I know that in perform well at the beginning because you could see the just and stop a lot. As a result, face the greatest number of entry points, were someone could come out to greet you.

As you walk to the interview area, as you want to their office with the conference room where the interview is going to go on, immediately size them up as a person. Are they smart or not? Are they aggressive or not? What are they like? Then, deal with them as you presuppose them to be. Experience tells me that if you meeting someone socially for the 1st time, 95 times out of 100 your instincts about them would be right. But because it's an interview, it's important, it's your career on the line, people paralyze their decision-making and freeze up. Just deal with them as you judge they're going to be. Like I said, 95 times out of 100, your instincts are right. Frankly, if you are at a casino and you knew you're going to win 95 times out of 100, would you worry about the other 5, or would you deal with a hand that you got dealt to know that you would win almost all the time? The latter, of course.

As soon as you walk in, size them up as you presuppose them to be and deal with them. That's because the 1st 10 minutes of the interview are the most important time of it. It's for each of you decides whether or not to pay attention to the other hour of your conversation.

Summary

Let's talk today about a different way to do research then where you been, probably doing ... Or different places, I should say.

Most of you, when you are doing your homework, you may go to a company's website, look around a little bit, it is kind of chaotic background checking, you've read some stuff on the site, you scan some things, you think you are done. Some of you may go the extra step of going on LinkedIn, seeing if you can find the profile of the person you are going to be meeting with. That can be difficult if your network is small. For me, it is pretty easy at this point because I have so many connections. My suggestion would be that if you do a Google search, site://www.linkedin.com and in quotation marks, put the person's name that may give you a shot if your network is small.

There are a few other places to do some research:
1. YouTube 

The firm you may be interview with might have some videos on YouTube. That may be even easier than searching the website.

2. Facebook. The company page on Facebook may be helpful to you.

3. The twitter feed for the person you would be meeting with may be extremely helpful to get an idea of what the thinking is like, the way they present themselves, you may see a photo of them there is all the more casual than what you see on LinkedIn… All this will give you more's rounded sense of them and their personality than you might underling to engage.

All in all, your job is to do some homework before the interview. So when they say, "So, what do you know about us," and not just simply sitting there going, "I don't know. Uh, I read some stuff. You are a good company." You don't want to come across in that way.

You want to come across as knowledgeable, competent, and present yourself with confidence because, to a real degree, what they are trying to do is get under your vernier, underneath the surface of you to see if there is something more there than the way you are packaging yourself.

One of the ways of deflecting that is to let them know that you are thorough. It is 1 of the most important things that a firm can learn about you is your thoroughness in preparation.

Again, research doesn't have to be hard, difficult, complicated, or take a long time. You can watch 3 videos on YouTube that a firm prepares, find the twitter feed for the person that you're interviewing with, read their company page on Facebook, go to the website, do a Google search… You can do a lot of things in 30 minutes and gotten far further along than you might have previously.

EP 929 Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter reminds you of the importance of preparing whether it is for a job interview or a standardized test.

Summary

I want to remind you about something that sometimes we take for granted, sometimes were casual about limited you in the context of the story.

As you know, I was a professional recruiter and did work as a headhunter for more than 40 years. In the course of doing my work, I try to prepare people for interviews. More more firms these days, no matter what level looks of experience some has, are relying upon standardized testing as a way of evaluating and assessing different candidates. The more senior someone gets the more likely that they are going to blow these things off or take them for granted or be casual about the tests. After all, "I can do this. I've done it before. I don't have to study for this."

There was a person is representing who took 1 of the standardized tests and did well. But they're not looking for "well." Do not looking for "good enough." They are looking for "exceptional." He knows this. He has been told this. He was told to do a little bit of homework before hand so that if he was rusty and some of the subject matter he would be well prepared. Instead of scoring 3.5 or better on the exam, he scores 3.15, which may or may not be good enough to get him onto the next step.

When I spoke with him, he was (I want to say he was blasé about it because I think that's unfair) disappointed in himself because he coasted. You can't afford to coast. When you interview. You may be competing (more often than not, you are). You're competing with yourself. You're competing with the standards an organization sets. The matter where you are interprofessional cycle, your job is to score an A+ on any exam that you take. I'm not talking about written exams necessarily. Interviews or form of exam, too. You want to be well prepared before you walk in the door, knowing what it is that they are looking for and be able to talk with them about what your role, responsibilities and accomplishments are (and if you're in IT, you have to include the technology that you've been using in order to accomplish your goals).

No more coasting. No more taking it easy. Go all out.

The Effect of Practice | No BS Job Search Advice Radio

EP 967 Here, I make the case for practicing your interviewing by telling the story of a chiropractor trying to find a job

Summary

Interview preparation makes a big difference. Let me tell you a story about someone been coaching.

Chiropractor moving from one state to another, smart guy, looks well, but is not a job hunter by profession; he's a chiropractor. We spent some time coaching; he's watched a bunch of my videos.

We spoke before his two interviews yesterday. One was with the practice owner; the other was an informational interview.

Practice owner – – typical chiropractic interview. Talks with the person, follows them around for a while, nice time, they invited back for another day of puppy dogging (following her around).

The other one was an informational interview where he meets with a practice owner just hired someone and liked them enough to refer him to someone else who he knew was trying to hire someone like the intention was to get advice from him and he walked out with something better.

Here's what my coaching client:

1. Equaling the power differential is really important. You want them to not feel like they are the superior and you are the potential subordinate. You want to be talking one human being to another.

2. The big thing was that he got signals from the first practice head and maybe this is a practice that was that successful yet or well structured yet. He picked up that maybe they were making indicate potential problems ahead. Would you like to know that before committing to a job?

The reason he was able to pick up on that was because the interviewing had become second nature to and he didn't have to focus on his answers to questions. He can also notice cues in how the practice was being run.

Watching my stuff and practicing his answers over and over again allowed him to not need to be focused on his answers

because they become second nature to him. He was able to focus on the person he was interviewing with.

On the informational interview, he already knew that the person had hired someone but was able to get a referral to someone else who was hiring and it was actually a big grenade chiropractor.

When push comes to shove, it's so important to be practiced, prepared and not just simply wing it on your interviews.
