I want to talk with you today as a recent grad or someone who is entering the workforce and offer 1 of those tough interview questions that you will be asked on your interviews. Today's question is, "Would you describe a teacher that you really connected with, and what was it about them. You really connected with?"

It may not be that language, but it is words to that effect. They are asking about a teacher that inspired you, motivated you, pushed you. What they are looking for isn't the name of that teacher (although it is a cool thing to mention their name). What they're looking for is that you can be motivated because they are thinking about a mentor.

Let me give you a simple answer. "There was so and so who is a professor of mine at (fill in the blank name of the school). What she did was really inspired us to be bigger than we were. Through that inspiration, she created a lot of excitement in me in this subject and in this career." That's one way of answering it.

Another one might be, "I remember this teacher I had. What he did was really pushes hard, drive us to excel, , challenges all the time." Notice that I've given you different types of answers and from that they can look at selecting a mentor for you.

Part of the reason that they ask this is to see if you have the emotional intelligence to be part of the team. Yes, I understand that once you are on board they have no interest in the emotional intelligence but play the game, okay? This is extensively what they are trying to find out about you. What the motivation is for you. How to motivate you. Who to connect you with. Whether you can be "reflective."

The subtlety here is that often it is a distraction because often the next question is going to be 1 of those tough, difficult grinding kind of questions that will really blow your mind. Recognize though that is a deflection and that you have to answer it sincerely. From there, be prepared with some tough follow-up questions that nothing to do with us.
