Create The Right Environment

Create an environment where people can win otherwise everyone loses

Employee Engagement Problems?

This video comes from an observation I have. Let me just back up for a second and say when I did coach training some years ago, there was a very provocative statement, at least it was provocative for me, that helped heighten my awareness of certain things. And the statement that was made is, “Environments win.”

Now, if we’re in sports or team sports, we know that winning teams have an easier time of winning. It’s not just about talent, it’s about the winning atmosphere.

If we’re in an office if we’re in a professional environment, and there’s an environment that feels depressed, if it feels as though people are struggling with feeling inspired about their work, if it’s just an awful place to be and you bring in someone with a lot of energy and passion for what they do, well, initially they’re going to be stepping in like gangbusters, but, eventually, the environment wears them down to the same level as the rest of them are.

I remember changing organizations some years ago, I did it really twice. I had my own businesses on many occasions for many years. And, on the first occasion (I changed actually on three occasions), I think about the first time I changed from my own environment to someone else’s. I worked for a firm with a morbidly obese owner who really try to weigh things down (I pick that term very carefully, but specifically) because, frankly, from his standpoint, he couldn’t deal with the pace and, thus, he wanted things slower and so,  to accommodate him and his girth.

I changed to a very fast-paced environment. I loved the energy. The owner was a lunatic. I’m not going to go into that story. I’ll just simply say I love the energy. When the lunatic owner became a little too much for me, I changed into another environment. That was a mistake for me. Although I stayed there for a long time, it didn’t really serve me personally. I did my job did extremely well, but it wasn’t the place for me.

For you, as a manager, what do you want to have energetically around you? We know you want people with certain skills and experiences, but what’s the personality like? What’s the energy in the office like? What’s the environment that you want to create with all these personalities that you’re going to be leading and managing and inspiring What do you want to have there and what gets in the way? How do people undermine that and how can you address that?

Remember, eventually, if you have three people who conspire against two (I’m just picking an office politics scenario) if you have the conspiratorial folks and the two who are not conspiratorial, guess who winds up winning? Seriously, if you have an environment where you tolerate misbehavior like I did In the third firm, where there was a guy who’s clearly was stealing from his colleagues. When you tolerate this, what’s the message you send out? For you, look at the messages you convey with what you do and what you don’t do.

I did a video interview with someone recently about leadership fails (I’ll have the link in the show notes to this so you can watch it) but there are mistakes that we make that undermine our leadership and undermine the climate that we want to have in the office. Yes, we want the work to be done. We don’t want to have a playpen. We want professional people.

What gets in that way? Because whether it’s an ugly office, which you may or may not be able to do something about, whether it’s a messy office, which you may or may not be able to do something about, or the people in the office, which you can definitely do something about, you want to create an environment that fosters what you want to accomplish.

Things that get in the way of that undermine the success that you’re going to have. Pay attention to it. Notice it. And if you want some help, reach out to me through LinkedIn.
