Convert Online Networking Into Results

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
I discuss how to make the swing to getting results.

7 Steps to Better Networking

This is a video that’s designed to help you convert those pseudo-relationships that you have developed online into something that will help you get results. I want to be clear, this is not “an instant response scenario. This is doing the work at the front end so that conversion becomes easy.

One easy way to do it is, if you belonged to an online group that creates a local event where people in the group get together, go! Start talking to people. Be approachable. Be friendly. Go! Just put a big smile on your face, exchange cards, do all the sort of friendly social things. Don’t drink too much, okay? Start working at the personal relationship while you’re at the in person meeting.

Then, for many of you, and I’ll use LinkedIn is the classic example, LinkedIn is a global platform and you need to think in terms of how you convert those connections that you have, those group memberships that you have, into something of value where you can ask for results.

One thing is through the shares that you can do on LinkedIn. You can write for the LinkedIn publishing platform which is like a blog and then share your material with others. You can share other people’s material with your followers. The real thing is that moment where you doing outreach to someone, where you say something to the effect of, “I read your article. It was terrific it. It touched me in certain ways.” You leave a comment.

“This helped me.”

It’s Not Always What You Know But Who You Know

Or you get into a discussion with the writer about the article.

Don’t use the LinkedIn template, “great post!” I hate getting those. There is no thought whatsoever that goes into it. I did one article this weekend. So far I’ve gotten 50 “great posts” in response. I’m confident that these people didn’t read the article. They have no idea what it’s about. All they are try to do is stroke my ego and all, I’m finding it does is annoy me. There is nothing personal about it. All they’ve done is use the template and send a quick note out. Ugh.

Two clicks. That’s it.

Again, personal.

So, most of your connections have no idea who you are. You reached out to them at different times and you need to convert those relationships now while the economy is good before you really need them so that they have a sense of you are and are willing to help. Reaching out every once in a while and saying, “would you be open to phone call. I saw something that you wrote. Would you be open to discussing it further?”

Or, I have a friend who’s interested in . . . “ And it might relate to something you do or your firm does. “Could I to introduce the two of you?”

Or, they reach out to you and they’re looking for an introduction. Introduce them. Don’t hold back.

If they message you, don’t simply respond by saying, “UNSUBSCRIBE,” or nonsense along those lines. You or networking. Sometimes that involves personal inconvenience but it’s part of a relationship because that’s what you trying to build . . . A relationship where you’re doing for them and they are doing for you. It happens naturally.
