Can I Transition Out of Management to a New Career I Love?
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Is it possible to make the break from managing to a staff role I really like without giving up money?
THE FINE LINE: Tenacity vs. Desperation
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and I coach people to help them in their careers in many different ways and someone asked me about transitioning out of their management career into something that they love and I know implied in the question that they’re asking me without giving up a lot of money. Now, I don’t know what this person earns. I just know that they’re not happy doing what they’re doing in this management job and I got the idea from what they wrote.
They have the romantic idea of going back in time to a staff level position but not make less money. We both know this is so improbable because why should someone and the answer only can come down to someone else who you know knows you, likes you, trusts you, to offer you an opportunity at a staff level to make the kind of money you’ve been earning and I’m going to go an extra dimension because of something that was inferred in what you wrote. You want to do something different.
Only someone who knows you is going to give you that kind of chance because if you’re another company and you’re first looking at someone who’s wanting to go back to staff, wants to do something different, wants to make the same money they’re making now, what’s in it for them? Why should they give you that opportunity? They don’t give it to their own people. Why are they going to give it to you as an outsider? Being a nice guy, being a terrific woman isn’t good enough. It really will take time for you to narrow down what it is you want to be doing because it’s not enough to say, I don’t want to manage.
I want to be on staff but what kind of staff job? What kind of work? You have to offer that up and you need to start engaging in conversation so you can get clearer about it because no one can figure it out for you. All that’s going to happen is you’re going to sit around and go, no, I don’t think so. I don’t want to do that.
Well, what do you want to do? I’m not sure. Well, get sure. Figure that part out.
Get sure about what you want to be doing then start talking to people and start talking about what you’re proposing. Someone will give you the chance. Is it going to be easy? No.
It’s going to be a hard journey but you can do it. I’m Jeff Altman. Hope you find this helpful.
