Build Rapport and Trust
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
LinkedIn’s AI commented, “Negotiating your career is not only about numbers and facts but also about emotions and relationships. You need to build rapport and trust with the person or people you are negotiating with, and show respect, empathy, and professionalism. You can do this by listening actively, asking open-ended questions, acknowledging their perspective, and finding common ground. You also need to avoid aggressive, defensive, or passive behaviors, and communicate clearly, confidently, and respectfully. Building rapport and trust will help you create a positive and collaborative atmosphere, and increase the chances of reaching a mutually beneficial agreement.”
I replied by writing, “A career negotiation is the culmination, not the beginning of building trust and rapport. They are meeting with you as a job hunter or an employee because they believe you can help them. Starting with the knowledge of what is in your interest and negotiating from that knowledge gives you a better class of questions to ask during your negotiations. Remember, the fundamental question you need to be prepared to answer is “What’s most important to me in a job or organization. What I need to know in order to TRUST THEM that they can deliver it to me. Aggressive behavior will (usually) not help you get what you want. Clarity of mind does much better for you.”
