Six reasons why LinkedIn recommendations are better for you than references. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search advice and coaching globally, because I make things so much easier in their job search.

Recommendations are those text descriptions, They’re like references on a LinkedIn profile that you’re able to read. And there are six reasons that I feel that they’re much better for you, as a job hunter and I have to say, you as a hiring manager, than waiting to interview a lot of people and checking references.

recommendationThe first one is, they’re more accessible. They can be seen by anyone who has access to the profile, whereas references are typically only shared with potential employers.

Second, they can be part of the decision to interview or interview you and influence a firm to meet you. You can even include them with your resume as a separate document.

Three, testimonials, recommendations are more credible, because they’re written by people who’ve worked with you and can attest to your skills and ability. They’re more trustworthy than references, which can be written by anyone, and they can lie about what their role has been in relationship to you. And Lord knows, I have seen many times where that’s happened.

Recommendations are more detailed. People provide specific examples of the work and accomplishments, which can help them (potential employers) get a better sense of what you’re capable of.

Recommendations tend to be more current. They’re written shortly after working with someone, which means they reflect the existing skills and abilities that you had at that particular point in your career. Whereas references can be pretty well outdated, no longer relevant and be provided and worthless to you as an employer or to employers.

Lastly, you can use them in a lot of different ways. They’re more versatile. They can be used as part of a separate document that you submit with your resume, that can be used with job applications, that can be used on a personal website. And from an employer perspective, you can be checking references through recommendations at any point in the search process. And that’s going to save you a lot of time.

So I’m encouraging clients I work with to look at recommendations and thus I’m encouraging people generate recommendations whenever you can, even to the point of writing the recommendation or a framework for a recommendation and telling someone “I want to make it a little easy for you. If you don’t like what I’ve said, feel free to to change it in any way you like.”
