I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and I coach people in organizations to help them be more effective. I'm playing with the camera a little bit. So excuse me, if I'm not quite looking at it. I'm just trying to get the height right. Now, I thought I would do a video today about branding mistakes and one of the classic mistakes that people make. People focus in on what their personal and professional brand is for their career. That's the good news is when that actually happens.

But what often happens is they make a mistake. And the mistake is they're so focused in the immediate, they forget the big picture. The immediate is "I need to do a good job. I want to learn. I want to grow. I want to get ahead," and they forget about positioning themselves over the next couple of years to be more effective.

What do I mean by that? Let's say you're a mid, mid level individual. You want to hit senior; you have your head down, but you're not talking to anyone. No one knows that you're doing great work. And the result winds up being you do a good job, but no one knows that you're doing that good job. You're not learning things that are going to help you position yourself for the next role. You are just in there doing the good job. Everything that you do has to have a step up involved with it.

Think of it from that perspective. What's the step up that you're aspiring to? Where do you want to get to? How does this work? So, who knows about this and how can you communicate with the people that you need to develop the relationships so that, frankly, you can move upward?

I must In all honesty say this happens in the C suite, as well. People have their heads down, doing their work, and they forget that there's a life cycle to each position and your Life Cycle could be three, four or five years, two years, one year. And you're not out there talking to people, you're not being seen as the celebrity C suite professional. Thus, when your time runs out in this world, who knows about you? Who knows about your successes? Who knows that that your success in this organization? Has it been written up? Have you been interviewed? What have you done to become more well known? I don't care where you are in the in the pecking order, you need to be seen as someone who is promotable, who is smart, capable, successful, effective. And, if you forget the big picture, you're in the weeds and not looking up and you can't allow that to happen.

So, I hope you found this helpful. I'm Jeff Altman. If you're interested in my coaching you for that next big move or to be more effective in your organization, reach out to me through LinkedIn at Mention that you saw the video so I know that this was helpful to you.
