Body Language: Facial Expressions | JobSearchTV.com

I haven’t done a video about body language but my interviews with Susan Ibitz are the trigger for this

The Body Language Guide for Job Hunters

I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I coach people and organizations to be more effective with job search, hiring, managing, being more effective in the workplace. Now, I haven’t really done a body language video in a long time. And the trigger for this was two interviews that I did with Susan Ibitz. And the interviews are titled, number one is “The Body Language Guide for Job Hunters,” and “Reading Body Language for Interviewers.” Two YouTube videos. They’re also available at TheBigGameHunter.us. Watch them. Really good. but I want to highlight something in particular, and that’s the notion of facial expressions.

Now, Susan’s work involves micro expressions, which are fractional quick expressions that may only be detectable on a frame by frame basis if you are watching someone on camera. But facial expressions are really very interesting.

Now we all know the classic yawn scenario. Now that doesn’t mean necessarily boredom although it might be. It could just simply mean you didn’t get a lot of sleep that night and you’re having troubles with paying attention.

You know, another one is the quizzical look or the smile on your face, shifting from your baseline normal facial expression to something new, to signal something to an interview. And once you understand that, they’re comparing you against your normal behavior and noticing things just like,, you know, in your interaction with other people.

You need to become conscious of your responses to things and perhaps (notice, I put a small smile on my face) notice how people respond to you. By doing that, if you’re in professional situations, in a meeting, you might just notice that when you talk, sometimes are you being interpreted as big, the self confident expert, or the know it all arrogant one, by putting a smile on your face and speaking with authority. If you suddenly look stern, firm, determined, your voice changes along with your facial expression. There’s a signal in that with people.

Being conscious of your facial expressions, and how people respond to them will help you in interviewing and will help you in other situations, as well. Now, firms are deploying video interviews through different services that are really looking for micro expressions, the quick mannerisms that you have that’s a signal to them, truthfulness or not confidence or not a million different things that deal with combinations. You probably can’t really deal with those except to try and present self confidence.

But, for yourself on a physical interview, whether it’s done on camera, with a person or in person, it’s important to just be conscious of your facial expressions so that, in this way, you don’t tip off to people, things that you don’t want to or suggest to people that you have a personality that’s (Notice the facial expression) not really all that attractive to them.
