Balancing Salary Expectations With Work-Life Needs

Balancing Salary Expectations With Work-Life Needs

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

I was contacted by LinkedIn for assistance with an article they were crowdsourcing.

They asked, “What are some effective strategies to balancing your salary expectations with your work-life needs?”

“Before you enter any salary negotiation, you need to do your homework and research the market value of your skills, experience, and role. You can use online tools, industry reports, or network with peers to get a realistic range of what you can expect and demand. Knowing your worth will help you avoid settling for less than you deserve or asking for too much and losing credibility.”

They are space limits to a response but before I did too much trimming, I wrote:

At the start your job search and, if you haven’t already done so, sit down with yourself and answer this question: What’s most important to me in the next job or organization? After you have a long list, prioritize it and compare it to what the firm has to offer. Often, you need to speak to your future boss to clarify a few points to make an informed choice. These may include questions about expectations, resources and the timeline for your work. During recessionary times, they may have an expectation of you doing more with less. Just because it is right for them doesn’t make it right for you. Try to negotiate discrepancies or inconsistencies to get clarity. Lastly, continue to interview for at least 60 days after joining so that if your new employer has lied, you are not trapped.
