a coach who helps people professionally in many different ways
and someone want to know when will HR start negotiating? You know, they're
involved in a search and I know most people are going to think of it at the
time of the offer . . . but that's not the right answer. The right answer is HR is
negotiating every step along the way beginning with your first screening call
with them until the point that you get the offer at the end they really don't
want to negotiate then what they're doing is moving the process forward from
the first conversation around money until the very end
let me explain and I'm going to give you a cheap variations one for those of you
who are in states where it's now illegal to ask about covered salary and then the
other one for states where it's still legal. So when they're talking with you
in the first phone call how much are you looking for they're opening the
negotiation there you're gonna state a price and they're gonna respond are you
going to be a little flexible sure and they've already accomplished something
with that they know you'll come off that number and that's a negotiation how
flexible are you willing to be will be a question that may surface later on or
some other determinant to say, "you know, we can't go as high as what you're
looking fo. R how flexible can you be?" This is part of a negotiation and, thus, in
states and cities in the United States where it's illegal to ask about current
salary this is a form of negotiation where it's still legal you know how much
you'making?" That's a negotiation question they're establishing the
baseline and these are locations where they may work with formulas for
percentage increases over what you're earning now how much you're looking for
they make a face and they make a funny noise it's suggesting right away that
was too much they haven't said anything but right off the bat you have received
a signal and that's a negotiation. "Or that's outside our salary range seem to
be a little flexible and that's negotiating come we haven't gotten
anywhere near the point where you're having a conversation with a hiring manager. HR
is already negotiating. So don't be fooled. And consider that in the
negotiation is happening when they're making the offer it's going on all the
