People always tell you to be networking to find work. And that’s great. It is absolutely true that networking is the way that most people find their next position. The statistics are very clear about that. However, it misses another component that’s very important. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for
no BS coaching and career advice globally, because I help people make their lives, their careers, a job search, hiring, dealing with workplace issues, much easier.
And, you know, there are lots of places that you can network. That could be with, you know, at an industry event or a professional gathering or a networking group. You know, there are lots of different people there that you can network with. And you can network with people from your past, personal and professional. This is great. And you can invite them to be discreet, although it’s unlikely they’re going to blab to someone else, that you’re out there looking for a job and try and get you into trouble. The people you’re going to talk to aren’t going to do that.
But what’s important is two things. Number one is building a genuine connection and relationship with people. Don’t just reach out to be transactional. That is me, me, me, me, me, help me. Try to establish a long-term relationship that could potentially lead to future opportunities, Industry Insights, introductions, and much more.
I interviewed Michelle Tillis Lederman some years ago, when her book “The Connectors Advantage” came out. Michelle talked about the importance of being a connector, different than networking, a connector– someone who proactively helps or seeks to create relationships and connect people with others who could benefit from their skills, resources or services.
She takes the position that being a connector is a powerful way to increase your influence and impact both in your personal and professional life. According to her, being a connector requires a combination of skills including empathy, curiosity, generosity, and strategic thinking.
She also offers a lot of tips and tools to help readers in her book, develop their connector mindset and build a network of meaningful relationships. That’s what you’re really trying to do is to be a connector and build meaningful relationships, not just simply by getting helped, but by offering help. By being the hub to other people’s spokes, and thus being of service to others.
Again, it’s a different way of approaching it. I hope you find this helpful. I’m Jeff Altman. My website is TheBigGameHunter.us There’s a ton in the blog that can help you. Plus, I’m going to encourage you to scheduled time with me for coaching or Trusted Advisor Services where I answer your questions about job search. At the site, there’s information about my video courses, which are very good, my books and guides, again, a lot there to help you plus the blog, which has thousands of searchable posts that you could watch, listen to or read. Also connect with me on Linkedin at linkedin.com/in/TheBigGameHunter. I’m trying to be a connector for you. So that in this way, if I could provide an introduction to someone, I’m happy to do it. Have a terrific day and be great!
