Age | Career Angles

A friend forwarded a joke to me from a Facebook page that was surrounded by grumpy older men and women sticking out a middle finger to everyone. Seeing the photos reminded me of how age remains an acceptable way of categorizing people in US culture and using it in ways that discriminate.

“They’ll never keep up with the pace here.”

“They’ll never take direction from me.”

“They are low energy.”

“They just look . . . (old, fat, dumpy, grumpy).”

“You look great! You don’t look a day over . . . (some number 10 or 20 years younger. No one says that unless the person they are talking to is old).

“I don’t think of you as being old. It’s those other people.”

Which of these have you said or thought to categorize people and not discern the difference between your bias and the reality.

Stop ignoring and being blind to people who can help you be professionally successful.

After all, they are your future . . . if you’re lucky.
