Ace the SMB Interview: Do Your Homework

You may think “winging it” in a job interview shows admirable confidence. However, employers want to see that you’ve done your homework. Thorough preparation and planning demonstrates valuable skills that employers seek in top candidates.
Rather than cram the night before, investigate the company inside and out over time. Know more about the business than the person interviewing you. Dedicated research highlights your planning abilities and motivation.
Start by learning the company’s ownership structure. For public firms, utilize online sources, stock brokers, and library archives. For private companies, get creative in your search through media, customers, competitors, and more.
Next, identify the organization’s main goals. Do their actions align with stated objectives? Consistency across the company is key.
Prepare explanations of how your background fits the open position. Be ready to discuss required skills, education, experience and industry knowledge.
Research expected compensation and benefits. Know industry standards for the role’s total pay package.
Study current issues and trends in the field. Ongoing learning needs may also come up.
Lastly, ask for feedback during the interview. Seek areas to improve your candidacy and emphasize if hired.
Careful preparation leads to interview confidence and success. Do your homework thoroughly and demonstrate you’re the top choice for the job.
