The Top 10 Reasons You Were Rejected for the Job
Here are seven reasons why a company should explain to someone why they were rejected for a job. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search and career advice globally, because I make the process so much easier for people related to their search, and much more– which includes helping organizations with their hiring.
It’s important to provide meaningful feedback to job applicants, even if they didn’t make the cut. By the way, it’s not enough to say we found someone who fits your needs better, without telling someone how they fit your needs better. So here are the seven things that I think number one is you’re helping them because it becomes a learning opportunity for them.
Providing feedback helps candidates gain insights into their strengths and weaknesses, so they can improve their future job applications and interviews.
Number two, it’s part of their professional development. Constructive criticism can help individuals identify areas for growth and enhance their skills and ultimately make them stronger candidates.
Now, those two I know you don’t really care about because it’s for them and not for you. The third one is about the brand’s reputation. Companies that offer feedback, build a reputation for being considerate and respectful, which can positively affect their employer brand and attract top talent. And remember, people will tell a lot of other people that you ghosted them on feedback, and that will affect your ability to attract and hire individuals.
Fourth is you build relationships with them. By taking the time to provide feedback, companies show appreciation for their interest in their organization. This fosters a positive relationship, which can lead to potential future collaborations or referrals. It also makes you (and this is one of those things that benefits you) It also makes you an attractive employer in the future for them to consider instead of being another bunch of a-holes.
Fifth, it demonstrates fairness. Being transparent about the reasons for rejection, helps them feel the process was fair and unbiased. It helps them understand that they were genuinely considered.
It also (number six) boosts their morale, because receiving feedback can be very disheartening, but it allows them to move forward with more clarity and motivation. It can lead them to redirect their efforts toward better-suited opportunities.
And seventh, it helps them with a growth mindset. Encouraging people to learn from setbacks and embracing challenges cultivates a growth mindset, benefiting both them and the organization that supports them.
Remember, providing feedback should always be done respectfully and professionally, focusing on constructive suggestions, not personal criticism, or professional criticism for that matter.
